At the start of a cybersecurity elective at an after school program, three girls were signed up for a class of twenty students. After seeing the class would be mostly comprised of boys, the three students decided to switch to a different elective class. Disappointed by the lack of support these girls felt, the class instructor decided to find a way to encourage more girls to explore the cybersecurity and computer science fields without feeling overpowered as a minority in a classroom. CyberGirls was created to introduce more female and non-binary middle school students to new technology ideas through an engaging and interactive format.
